UEI Number – Unique Entity Identifier:
A Unique Entity Identifier number is a 12-character alphanumeric code issued by the U.S. federal government to uniquely identify entities applying for federal grants, awards, or contracts. A UEI number is required to be eligible for federal grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements and for doing any business with federal agencies. To obtain a UEI number, entities go through a vetting process which requires validating the legal business name, physical address, and providing documentation (like articles of incorporation or IRS letters) to ensure the entity is legitimate. This vetted validation is mandatory for doing business with the federal government. Entities register through the System for Award Management website (SAM.gov).
CAGE Code – Commercial and Government Entity Code:
A Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) code is a unique identifier assigned to suppliers to various government or defense agencies, as well as to government agencies themselves and also various organizations. CAGE codes provide a standardized method of identifying a given facility at a specific location, and is obtained after a UEI number has been assigned. It is created through registering an entity in the System for Award Management (SAM.gov).
